How to Choose Your Mobility Aid

Posted January 20, 2020

Do you struggle with mobility?

Whether it’s bending down to tie your shoelaces, going to the shops to buy your groceries, visiting your grandchildren at their house, or just walking around the park to do some exercise — having difficulties with movement can make these activities a struggle.

While there is a wide range for mobility aids available, the option that you should ultimately choose will depend on several factors that include:

  • Your level of physical strength
  • The presence of any injuries or disabilities
  • The purpose of your mobility equipment
  • And finally, your budget

The first step to deciding which mobility aid you should purchase is to first determine your needs and wants.

Determining Mobility Aid ‘Must Haves’

Depending on the condition of your body, you’ll have different needs for your mobility aids. These ‘needs’ are requirements that must be met before you can even consider the purchase. If these are not met, the mobility aid is not right for you and shouldn’t be purchased.

For example, if you have minimal strength in your lower body or none at all, one requirement would be that your body must be supported by the equipment. This would mean walkers, canes, and other similar mobility aids will not be sufficient. Instead, you’ll need to choose a mobility aid like a scooter or wheelchair.

Examples of Mobility Aids

Walking aids these include canes, walkers, and walking frames. This is a really good choice if you just need a little bit of assistance because your lower body is weaker. These can prevent you from tripping, falling, or from just getting tired while moving around

Wheelchairs and scooters make iteasier to move around when your lower body has minimal strength and can’t support you walking distances or walking at all. These completely support your body and allow for the mobility aid to transport you.

Choosing The Right Mobility Aid

Once you know which category of mobility aid is best for you, the next step will be determining the best option within the category.

The best way to do this is to expand from your mobility aid ‘must haves’ and include a ‘nice to have’ category. This could include special features like foldability, quick charging, longer battery life etc. Take into consideration these nice to have features and balance it with your predetermined budget.

Once you’ve determined the category of mobility aid that will suit you best, have created a list of must haves and nice to haves, you’re ready to make a well-educated decision on your mobility aid purchase.

However, one last step may be required depending on your piece of equipment. Unique customisations to fit your body may be required. For example, wheelchairs may have options for personalization to better fit the shape of your body. Or you may be suffering from a specific injury or disability that will require the piece of equipment to be modified.
